Wiltshire Chalet Bungalow

This design was commissioned by a couple moving into a four bedroom chalet bungalow situated on a large plot in open countryside in Wiltshire. The views & the large plot is what attracted them to buy, but they wanted a ‘fresh pair of eyes’ to see how the room layout could be improved.

The property has a master bedroom with en-suite upstairs; three downstairs bedrooms, a bathroom plus a living room & kitchen, which had been added to in the past. The kitchen is tucked ‘out back’ with no real connection with the other communal living spaces.

The couple new they wanted open plan living but the key was making the best of the layout to allow light from the south facing front of the house to brighten up the kitchen at the back.

The obvious solution was to knock through the living room & extend back to link through to the kitchen area. Large bi-fold or sliding doors would bring light into the kitchen area but in summer, a patio off the kitchen diner would be the perfect place to get the late afternoon sun. Adapting the current family bathroom into a utility room would keep this often messy area out of sight.

The couple had planned to make the dining room into an office but this light filled room would make a lovely TV/snug for the winter months.

Looking forward, phase two of the renovation could involve extending the back of the property which would allow room for an extended master bedroom with en-suite (future proofing the property for when the couple get older); a new study/office & a relocated bathroom. The new bathroom & ensuite would be sited under the existing shower room making water & waste easy to access.

So the plan I designed has linked the living areas allowing maximum light to flood in plus I’ve suggested how the property can work for them in years to come.

Fingers crossed the house move goes smoothly & they will be living in their dream home soon.
